Mission Statement
The 2006 KGS-BGA Tournament aims to provide an enjoyable social and competitive on-line environment for UK go players, and guests, during the month of June.
Rules
The tournament will run from the 1st
of June to the 30th of June, with core playing nights on
Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The overall winner of the tournament will
receive a modest prize (most likely a book token from the BGA Bookshop) and
have a game of their choice constructively commented on by a professional
player, and included in the British Go Journal. There will also be modest
prizes for those winning individual categories:
Time limits are 25 minutes per person, with Canadian Overtime of 16 stones in precisely 4 minutes. We will use (KGS) Japanese Rules with komi set to 6.
The tournament is self pairing. There will be a list of registered players to help identify opponents.
This year we will be operating with KGS Grades. Handicaps will be calculated from your current solid KGS grade. If you do not have a solid KGS grade the arbiter will guide you in selecting an appropriate grade for play during the tournament. Games will be played at Handicap -1. That is a 3kyu and a 5kyu would be no komi, whilst a 3kyu and 4kyu would play on even, using Nigiri to decide colours.
Each game should begin with both players typing “BGA Tournament”. This means both the players and the arbiter will recognise it as a tournament game. All games should be played in the British Room on the Kiseido Go Server.
You may play the same opponent at most three times.
The greatest handicap generally permissible is 9 stones (organiser's discretion is reserved to modify this if necessary).
Results of tournament games must be recorded on the tournament website ( Thank you one again Edwin! )
Progress in the tournament will be measured once again by the legendary Wanstead formula, which balances success and persistence. Tournament Score = (points – square root(points) ) / number of games). To qualify for a prize you will have to complete at least 5 games. The maximum number of games you can play is 19.
Pre-entry is encouraged but not demanded. However be warned that entry will close after the 15th of June. There is also an exciting side event to enjoy
There are a few aspects of Go etiquette which are specific to the internet, the ones which concern us here are seen below.
Granting Undo Requests: Firstly please be careful where you click. Nobody can be expected to judge with absolute certainty what was a genuine slip of the mouse and what was a crass blunder. We encourage you to maintain mercy on this front. Misclicks do happen, and most of the time they are obvious. However, ultimately, you have the right to refuse a request for an undo and should feel free to exercise it.
Adjournments: Ideally these should not happen. If you believe you require an adjournment you must agree this with your opponent before the game. Simple disconnection is sometimes unavoidable, but unauthorised absence will most probably be interpreted as a resignation by the arbiter.
Kibbitz: Many of us like to engage in discussion about the play whilst watching a game. However, tact and diplomacy is required as this chatter can be seen by the players when the game ends.
Pictures It is generally considered to be both right and proper to play with a picture or avatar for your KGS account. However in the interests of inclusivity we will be allowing all players to participate this year. You can find sample pictures to suit your style of play here
