NUS Elections

There are many people at Conference attempting to confuse delegates with lies and half-truths about the electoral system. Common claims are of 'wasted votes' and 'splitting the vote'. All NUS elections use transferable preferential voting - if the candidate you want does not get enough votes to be in the last two, their votes will be redistributed based upon delegates next preferences. You can't waste your vote and there is no danger of splitting the vote against anybody. The system is set up so you can vote for which ever candidate you prefer. If you don't think any of the candidates can do the job - remember that you always have the option of voting to re-open nominations (RON).

Read this Guide to STV elections for more information on this electoral system.

Candidates

Details of candidates standing at Conference 2002 can be found in the 'News' section of this site.

Standing for Election

Thinking of standing for election yourself? Wanting to get more involved in your National Union? There are two main sets of elections coming up at NUS Conference, those for the National Executive Committee, and those to a collection of National Committees.

NEC Elections

NUS Annual Conference will elect six sabbatical (full-time) officers:

  • National President
  • National Secretary
  • National Treasurer
  • Vice President - Education
  • Vice President - Further Education Union Development (VP-FEUD)
  • Vice President - Welfare

Conference will also elect twelve part-time members of the National Executive Committee (the so-called Block of Twelve.
To stand you will need to collect the names and signatures of between ten and fifteen members of NUS, from at least three different Unions (Constituent Members), send in a form consenting to stand for election and an A3 manifesto. The deadline for nominations, the 15th February 2002, has now passed. Conference 2003 perhaps?
The NEC also includes officers elected by the Liberation Campaign Conferences (National Womens Officer, National Students with Disabilities Officer, National Black Students Officer, and two LGB Officers) or Special National Conferences (NUS Scotland President, UCMC/NUS President and NUS-USI Convenor). If you are interested in standing for these contact NUS HQ, but be aware the deadlines are different from the NEC posts elected at Annual Conference.

Committee Election

NUS Conference will also elect members to the Steering Committee (runs Conference), the Finance Committee (keeps a check on the NEC's spending), the Rules Revision Committee (responsible for reviewing the Rules of NUS and ensuring the NEC stick to them) and Elections Committee (runs NUS elections).
Nominations close during NUS Conference and require the signatures of ten Conference delegates from at least three different Unions.

NUS also has several other Committees you could get involve with. Both the Higher and Further Education Sector Conferences elect National Committees (HENC and FENC respectively), nominations for which close during National Conference. Each of the Liberation Campaigns elects a Committee, as well as a representative to NUS National Council - for information contact the NEC officer responsible for the Campaign

Good luck

If you do decide to stand for election - good luck. NUS Conference can be hard work - but without the candidates to choose from, all delegates are impoverished.
