Campaign NewsLiberal Democrats Launch NUS CampaignLiberal Democrats have launched their NUS Campaign, having officially backed Paul Leake for NUS National Secretary and Emily Fieran-Reed for the Block of Twelve. Both are sabbatical officers at Durham Students' Union with a long record of involvement in the student movement. Paul welcomes Wales announcementPaul Leake, candidate for NUS National Secretary welcomed the announcement that students in Wales will soon be eligible for maintenance grants. The announcement, which includes support for students studying in further education, followed pressure from a wide range of groups including NUS Wales/UCMC and the Welsh Liberal Democrats, leading to a report by the respected academic Theresa Rees into student hardship. This highlighted the effect that Labour's scrapping of maintenance support had on students lives. Paul believes that this announcement is a real step towards ensuring that no student is priced out of education. Paul is calling on the Government across the UK to go further. Election News05-03-2002It is reported that Geraint Hopkins, an Independent candidate for NUS President has withdrawn from the election, fearing 'splitting' the anti-Labour Students vote. Geraint claimed, on educationet.org, that there was 'no scandal, no deal, nothing', and that the decision was prompted by the need to ensure that Labour Students were beaten because Labour has 'treated students disgracefully'. Geraint now intends a withdrawl from the heady world of NUS politics to seek ordination in the Church of England. 16-02-2002Details of candidates for NUS NEC elections are now online. RON (re-open nominations) is a candidate in all elections. This year's Conference will see a four-way fight for President between Brooks Duke (Independent), Carli Harper-Penman (UfE), Geraint Hopkins (Independent) and Mandy Telford (Labour Student). Geraint has since withdrawn from the race.Controversy flared at the close of nominations when current VP-FEUD, Sandrea Morgan had her nomination ruled out of order, for failure to sign the form. Earlier that day Sandrea had announced her withdrawl from the UfE slate, in favour of a candidacy as part of slate put together by NUS President Owain James. The race for VP-FEUD is now wide open, with no official candidates from any of the main factional groupings. ResultsResults for all elections will be posted here where available. National Students with Disabilities OfficerBarry Farleigh (Independent) beat current SWD Officer, Chris O'Sullivan (Independent) by a single vote! National Womens OfficerKat Fletcher, the incumbent National Womens Officer, as expected, stormed home in this election, easily beating RON. While the election was controversy free, Conference became heated following NUS housing delegates in inappropriate hotel accommodation, leaving them facing sexism and homophobia.
